Elections are over. Republicans pulled it off big with an 18-11 majority on the County Legislature. Democrats picked up a seat on the City Council but lost a rising star by throwing Frank Meola under the bus. Gigliotti won the Judge race with 55% over a tough campaign by Claudia Tenney.
There was the usual backstabbing, controversy and dirty tactics that are the norm in Utica politics. Interestingly enough, a 208 vote swing and the Democrats would have the majority. 22 votes in the 19th, 17 votes in the 22nd, 148 votes in the 24th and 21 votes in the 25th. So, the GOP shouldn’t be too complacent over the next two years. And remember, it will be a year where an unpopular GOP County Executive will be on the ballot.
For all those that are riding high today, I caution that politics is a tricky game. Stay humble and remember the toes you stepped on this year. It could come back to haunt you.
